(1) Loosen the four checknuts [103] and checknuts [105] from the tab pushrods [110].

(2) Push the elevator trailing edge full up by hand.

(3) While you move the elevator trailing edge down, align the center of the elevator trailing edge
with the index mark in +/- 0.04 inch (+/- 1.0 mm), or less (Figure 505).
NOTE: Keep the elevators at this position while you measure and adjust the tab pushrods. If
the elevator position is changed, you must put the elevator trailing edge at the full up
position and do this step again before you continue.

(4) Install the fixture, SPL-1686 (Figure 512):
(a) To use the fixture, SPL-1686, do the steps that follow:
1) Move the digital micrometer to the bottom of the slide.
2) Push the button on the micrometer to zero the micrometer reading.
3) Move the digital micrometer up until it gives the same reading as the calibration value
stamped on the side of the tool.
NOTE: This brings the pointer on the micrometer up to approximately 0.3 inch (8
millimeters) below the trailing edge of the elevator tab.
4) Push the button on the micrometer to zero the micrometer reading.

(b) Install the fixture, SPL-1686 below the elevator and elevator tab at the second elevator tab
hinge (from inboard).

(c) Install the fixture, SPL-1686 below the elevator and elevator tab at the third elevator tab
hinge (from inboard).

(d) Make sure the cross bar on the fixture, SPL-1686 touches the lower surface of the elevator
trailing edge.

(5) Adjust the tab pushrods [110] until the gap between the elevator tab trailing edge and the fixture,
SPL-1686 (dimension X) is 0.36 +/- 0.01 inch (9.1 +/- 0.3 mm) (Figure 512).
NOTE: You may need to do a coarse adjustment of the elevator tab pushrods if the gap
between the elevator tab trailing edge and the fixture is too much.
You must always do a fine adjustment of the elevator tab pushrods if dimension X is not
in the tolerance.
NOTE: While adjusting the elevator tab pushrods, the number of threads showing on the
elevator tab pushrod ends should be approximately equal to the number of threads
showing on the bushing [104].

(6) If it is necessary, do this coarse adjustment of the elevator tab pushrods by turning the tab rod
ends (Figure 510):
(a) Remove the pins [111], nuts [109], washers [108], bolts [106], and bushings [107] from the
tab pushrods [110].
(b) Turn the tab pushrod ends until the distance between the elevator tab trailing edge and the
fixture, SPL-1686 (dimension X) is approximately 0.36 inch (9.1 mm).
NOTE: One half turn of the tab pushrod end is equal to 0.1 inch (3 mm) at the elevator tab
trailing edge.
(c) Install the bushings [107], bolts [106], washers [108], and nuts [109] to connect the tab
pushrods [110] to the elevator tab [102].
NOTE: The inboard bolt is installed with the head inboard and the outboard bolt is
installed with the head outboard
NOTE: If you loosened or removed the nuts [109], they need to be replaced and not reinstalled.
Using new nuts will ensure that they have the required run-on torque of
3.5 in-lb (0.4 Nm).

(7) Do this fine adjustment of the elevator tab pushrods (Figure 508 or Figure 509):
(a) Turn the bushing [104] to adjust the length of the tab pushrods [110].
