unknown conflicting aircraft, unless it is impracticable. If requested
by the pilot and if possible, a course of avoiding action will
be suggested.
4.4 Traffic information in respect of an unidentified aircraft will normally
take the following form:
a. relative position of the unidentified aircraft to aircraft track in
terms of the 12 hour clock except that, if the radar controlled
aircraft is turning, relative position will be specified by reference
to compass points;
b. distance from the unidentified aircraft in miles;
c. direction in which the unidentified aircraft appears to be proceeding.

5. SPEED CONTROL (ARRIVING AIRCRAFT)
5.1 To facilitate radar control, a pilot may expect the application of
speed control. Speed control instructions refer to indicated airspeed
or mach number.
5.2 The pilot must request an alternative when the speed control instruction
is unacceptable on operational grounds.
5.3 When the application of speed control can be foreseen, a pilot will
be advised of future intentions.
5.4 A pilot will be advised to resume desired speed when a specific
speed control instruction is no longer necessary. Unless otherwise
stated, a speed control instruction applies until the aircraft reaches
the point in the descent profile where the speed would normally
be reduced below that assigned by ATC. Unless otherwise
specified, a clearance for final approach (except DME arrival) or a
clearance for a visual approach terminates speed control.
6. SURVEILLANCE RADAR APPROACH PROCEDURES
6.1 General
6.1.1 The Surveillance Radar Approach (SRA) is a military procedure
available only at some military aerodromes. Civil aircraft are not
authorised to make a SRA, except in an emergency where no pilotinterpreted
instrument approach aid can be used by the aircraft.
6.1.2 Prior to commencement of a SRA, the aircraft will be provided with
information on:
a. the runway to be used;
b. the minimum descent altitude;
and, unless the pilot is familiar with SRA procedures:
c. a description of the procedures including:
(1) advice that altitudes to maintain the required glide path
will be passed at regular intervals on final,
(2) the angle of the nominated glide path, and
(3) if necessary, the approximate rate of descent to be maintained;
and
d. the procedure to be followed in the event of missed approach or
loss of communications.
6.1.3 The pilot will be advised to perform cockpit checks for landing
while on downwind leg or, if an incomplete circuit pattern is used, in
advance of the commencement of final approach.

6.1.4 Clearance to land, or any alternative clearance, will be passed to
the aircraft before it reaches a distance of 2NM from touchdown. If
the pilot has not received a positive instruction by 2NM, the pilot
should initiate a go-around. Surface wind conditions will be
passed with the landing clearance if not notified previously.
6.1.5 An aircraft making an SRA will be:
a. directed to execute a missed approach in the following circumstances:
(1) when the aircraft appears to be dangerously positioned
on final approach; or
(2) for reasons involving traffic conflictions; or
(3) if no clearance to land has been received from the tower
controller by the time the aircraft reaches a distance of
2NM from touchdown; or
(4) on instructions by the aerodrome controller; or
b. advised to consider executing a missed approach in the following
circumstances:
(1) when the aircraft reaches a position from which it appears
that a successful approach cannot be completed;
or
(2) if the aircraft is not visible on the radar display for any significant
interval during the last 2NM of the approach; or
(3) if the position or identification of the aircraft is in doubt
during any portion of the final approach.
In all such cases, the reason for the instruction or the advice
should be given to the pilot.
6.2 Continuation of a SRA in an Emergency
6.2.1 In an emergency, a pilot may request that an SRA be continued
beyond the missed approach point until the runway is sighted. In
such circumstances, the pilot will be advised that after the missed
approach point, no level information will be provided and that
heading information will be advisory only, to be used at pilot’s
discretion.

7. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
7.1 General
All possible assistance will be given to aircraft in distress.
