and pulled as it is being poured. Continuous casting produces ingots whose length is not determined by the
length of a mold.
continuous-duty ignition system (gas turbine engine). A type of secondary ignition system for a gas
turbine engine. This system is used during takeoff and landing, as well as in flight when weather conditions
are such that could cause an engine to flame out. The continuous-duty system keeps one igniter plug firing.
continuous-duty rating (electrical machinery). The rating of an electrical machine which specifies the
amount of electrical load the machine can carry for an indefinite period of time.
continuous-duty solenoid. A solenoid-type switch designed to be kept energized by current flowing
through its coil for an indefinite period of time.
The battery contactor in an aircraft electrical system is a continuous-duty solenoid. Current flows
through its coil all of the time the battery is connected to the electrical system.
continuous-element fire detection system. A fire and overheat detection system in which a gas-releasing
element and a pressure switch are sealed in a stainless steel tube installed so it surrounds the compartment
being protected.
If the tube is exposed to a fire or an overheat condition, the element releases gas and closes the
pressure switch. This actuates the fire warning system.
continuous-flow oxygen system. A system of aviation breathing oxygen in which a metered amount of
oxygen flows continuously into the mask. A rebreather-type mask is used with a continuous-flow system.
The simplest form of continuous-flow oxygen systems regulates the flow by a calibrated orifice in the
outlet to the mask, but most systems use either a manual or automatic regulator to vary the pressure across
the orifice proportional to the altitude being flown.

continuous gusset (wing rib bracing). A brace made of thin plywood used to reinforce the glue joints of
all the upright and diagonal braces used in a wooden wing rib. The continuous gusset runs the full length of
the rib, rather than being made in the form of small separate gussets at each joint.
continuous-loop fire detection system. A type of fire detection system which uses two conductors,
separated by a thermistor material, formed into a continuous loop that surrounds the area being protected.
A thermistor is an electrical insulator at normal temperature, but becomes a conductor when
heated. When a fire occurs, the thermistor conducts electricity and completes the fire warning circuit. This
turns on the fire warning light and starts the fire warning horn or bell.
continuous magnetic particle inspection. A method of magnetic particle inspection in which the part is
inspected while the magnetizing current is flowing either through the material or through a coil, or solenoid
around the part.
continuous wave radio transmission. See CW.
contour (meteorology). A line drawn on a constant-pressure chart to show the pattern of points of equal
pressure. These lines are similar to the contours shown on a topographical relief map that show lines of
equal height.
contour (radar meteorology). A line on a radar scope that shows the areas of equal radar echo intensity.
contouring circuit (radar meteorology). A circuit which displays multiple contours of echo intensity
simultaneously on the plan position indicator or range-height indicator scope.
contour map. A map of a geographical area which has lines drawn on it that connect points of equal
elevation.
contrail. The long visible trail resembling a cloud left behind some airplanes as they fly at high altitude.
Contrails form when water vapor from the hot engine exhausts condense and freeze into tiny ice crystals.
These crystals reflect light from the sun and form the visible track across the sky.
contrarotating. Rotating in opposite directions.
contrarotating propellers. Two propellers mounted on concentric shafts and turning in opposite directions.
The two propellers are driven by either a single engine or two engines coupled together, and their opposite
rotation counteracts the effect of torque caused by the engines driving the propellers.

control. A mechanism or system used to regulate or guide the operation of a machine or organization.
control area (air traffic control). Airspace designated as Colored Federal Airways, VOR Federal Airways,
control areas associated with jet routes outside the continental control area (14 CFR 71.161), additional
control areas (14 CFR 71.163), control area extensions (14 CFR 71.165), and area low routes.
Control areas do not include the continental control area, but unless otherwise designated, they do
