condenser (air conditioning system component). The component in a vapor-cycle air conditioning
system in which the refrigerant gives up the heat it picked up as it passed through the evaporator.
This heat is given up to the air flowing through the fins around the condenser tubing. When the
refrigerant gives up its heat, it changes state, or condenses from a gas into a liquid.
condenser (electrical component). An old term for a capacitor. See capacitor.
con-di duct. The British name for a convergent-divergent duct. See convergent-divergent duct.
conditionally unstable air (meteorology). Unsaturated air that will be unstable if it becomes saturated.
Unstable air rises because it is warmer than the air surrounding it.
condition lever (turboprop engine control). An engine control used with a turboprop engine to control
the pitch of the propeller for the flight operating range, the alpha range, of operation.
conductance (electrical parameter). A measure of the ability of a device to conduct electricity. The
symbol for conductance is G, and it was once measured in mhos (ohm spelled backward), but it is now
measured in siemens.
conduction (thermal). A method of heat transfer by direct contact in which heat energy moves from a
higher energy level to a lower level by direct contact. A hand touching a hot stove will be burned because

heat energy from the stove is transferred by conduction.
conductive coating (electrically conductive material). A finish applied to a nonconductive material to
lower the electrical resistance of its surface. A conductive coating on an aircraft component prevents the
buildup of static electricity on its surface.
conductivity (electrical characteristic). The ability of a material to allow electrons to move freely
between its atoms.
conductivity (thermal characteristic). The ability of a material to transfer heat by allowing heat energy to
pass from one molecule to another within the material.
conductor (electrical). A material whose outer shell (valence shell) electrons are held in the atom with a
weak force and are therefore able to be moved from one atom to another with a small amount of electrical
pressure. Most conductors have three or fewer valence electrons.
conductor (thermal). A material that is able to transfer heat easily and directly to another material by
conduction. Most metals are good thermal conductors, while wood, paper, cloth, and many plastic materials
are poor conductors — they are insulators.
conduit (electrical component). A tube or duct used to enclose and protect electrical wiring. Rigid conduit
is usually made of thin-wall aluminum tubing, and flexible conduit is made of metal braid.
cone. A solid shape formed by rotating a right triangle about one of the legs which forms the right angle.
cone bottoming (propeller installation problem). A condition in the installation of a propeller on a
splined shaft when either the front or rear cone contacts an obstruction that prevents the cone seating
properly inside the propeller hub.
cone clutch. A type of clutch used to engage and disengage a component from a drive unit. The part of the
clutch attached to the drive unit is a smooth internal cone, and the drive element of the clutch is made in the
form of an external cone that mates exactly with the drive cone. Most cone clutches use a friction liner
between the two surfaces.
Oil pressure applies a force that wedges the two cones tightly together to engage the clutch, and a
spring disengages the clutch by forcing the cones apart when the oil pressure is released.
cone of silence (radio navigation). A location directly above the antenna of a four-course, low-frequency
radio range in which the signals from the antennas cancel and no signal is received. The cone of silence can
be identified by the signal building up in volume just before it disappears.
conflict alert (air traffic control). The function of an automated air traffic control system which alerts
radar controllers of existing or pending situations which the program recognizes as requiring immediate
attention and/or action.
conflict resolution (air traffic control). The resolution of potential conflicts between aircraft that are radar
identified and in communication with ATC by ensuring that radar targets do not touch.
Pertinent traffic advisories shall be issued when this procedure is applied.
congeal. To change from a freely flowing liquid into a liquid too viscous, or stiff, to flow.
congealed oil. Oil that has become too viscous, or thick, to flow because of its low temperature or because
of contamination. Congealed oil is too stiff to act as a proper lubricant for an aircraft engine.
