WARNING:_______DO NOT LET THE SPRING (23) MOVE FREELY. IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO PARTS.
 (b)  
Keep the support fitting (27) from the spring pressure and remove the support fitting, laminated shim (38) and clutch collar (26). 1) Keep laminated shims for the support fitting installation,

 or measure the necessary thickness for the new shims.

 (c)  
Remove the inner shaft (24), the spring (23), the spacer (40) and the spring depressor (19) from the inner shaft.

 (d)  
Remove the yoke attachment nut (39) and the thrust washer (25) from the inner shaft (24).

 (e)  
Disconnect the yoke (18) from the dangler (15) and move the yoke and the thrust collar (16) off the center shaft (45).

 (f)  
If you do not remove the cam (49) as a part of the external handles (9) and the center shaft assembly (45), do this step:

 1)  Remove the spanner nut (52) with the adapter wrench and remove the bearing spacer (51) from the outer shaft (48).

 (g)  
If you remove the cam (49) as a part of the external handles (9) and the center shaft assembly (45), do this step: 1) Remove three bolts (57), washers (56) and bearing

 retainers (55) which attach the cam to the housing (21).

 (h)  
Remove the external handles (9), outer shaft (48), center shaft (45) and cam (49) as a unit, if it is applicable. 1) Keep the laminated shim (53 or 58) for the outer shaft

 installation, or measure the thickness for the new shim.

 (i)  
If you do not remove the cam (49) with the external handles (9) and the center shaft assembly (45), and it is necessary to remove the cam, do these steps: 1) Remove three bolts (57), washers (56), and bearing

 retainers (55) and move the cam out of the door. 2) Keep the laminated shim (53), or measure its thickness for the new shim.

 (j)  If you remove the external handles (9) from the center shaft (45), do these steps (Detail A): 1) Remove the bolts (11) and the coverplates (10) from the
 pedestals (13).
 2)  Remove the bolts (6), pivot spacers (14), nuts (12) and washers (7) which connect the pedestals (13) to the handles (9).
 3) Remove the pedestals. 4) Remove the outer shaft (48) and move the handles away from the center shaft (45).

If you only remove the external handles (9) and the center shaft (45), do this task: "Handle Mechanism Assembly Installation" to install these components.
