Examine the internal door handle.

 (a)  
Close and latch the door.

 (b)  
Do these steps to make sure the inner door handle moves smoothly and freely. 1) Turn the handle to the open position. 2) Turn the handle to the closed position.

 (c)  
Do these steps to make sure the exterior door handle moves smoothly and freely. 1) Turn the handle to the open position. 2) Turn the handle to the closed position.

 (d)  
Measure the torque on the inner door handle. 1) Attach a spring scale to the handle (or torque wrench) 18 inches from the shaft of the handle mechanism. 2) Set the spring scale to be at zero with all the backlash removed. 3) Slowly open the door with the torque wrench or pull on the spring scale.

 4)  Write the torque or force from the spring scale and the linear distance the handle moved at the highest value.
 NOTE: Do this 3 or 4 times to make sure you get a correct
____
 value.

 5)  Make sure the torque is 220-400 pound-inches (12-22 pounds on the spring scale) and the linear travel is 1.2-2.5 inches (4.5-9.0 degrees of movement of the handle).

 MAIN ENTRY DOOR NO. 1 - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure contains two tasks. The first task is the removal of the No. 1 main entry door. The second task is the installation of the No. 1 main entry door.
 B.  There is more material on the new spare doors to permit the door to be interchangeable. You can cut off the unwanted material during the door installation.
 C.  The front and aft positions of the door in the opening are not
 adjustable, but the vertical and lateral positions are.

 D.  For door 5 removal/installation, refer to AMM 52-11-09/401.
