Prepare to Install the Diaphragm-Mechanical Seal

_______ SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM SOLVENTS. SOLVENTS ARE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS. SOLVENTS MAY BE FLAMMABLE OR HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT. REFER TO PRODUCT MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS) AND LOCAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PROPER HANDLING PROCEDURES.
 (1)  
Clean the seating surfaces of the seal with the solvent and a cloth to fully remove grease, oil, dirt, or adhesive. Wipe off the MEK , isopropyl alcohol, or ethyl alcohol before it dries with a clean dry cloth.

Remove the unwanted sealant from the seal corner locations on the door structure.

Rub the surface until unwanted dirt is removed. If it is necessary, rub with a soft bristle brush to remove the soil.

Install the Diaphragm-Mechanical Seal

 (1) Put the seal around the door edges with the lip of the seal in the outboard direction. Make sure the seal is stretched equally.
 NOTE: The seal has "TOP" and "BOTTOM" marks along the top and
____ bottom edge of the seal. These marks are on the seal and the seal retainers to help align the seal correctly.

 (2)  Align the marks on the seal with the marks on the seal retainers to
 0.50 inch or less.

Install the top and lower diaphragm seals (Views A-A and B-B, Fig. 401).

 (a)  
Put one edge of the diaphragm seal into the seal retainer.

 (b)  
Apply the detergent to lubricate the rods that you will install in the diaphragm seal retainer.

 (c)  
Install the nylon rod or metal rods (two at each location) into the diaphragm seal retainer. Do these steps: 1) If the nylon rod is installed, push the nylon rod into the

 center of the seal retainer and make sure it holds the seal in the socket of the seal retainer.
 2)  If the metal rods are installed, push the rods into the end of the seal retainer. Make sure the rods are aligned with the ends of the seal retainer.
 NOTE: The rods are permitted to be recessed in the
____ retainer a maximum of 0.2 inch. A maximum clearance of 0.6 inch is permitted between the ends of the rods at the center of the door.
 (d)  Do the steps again to install the nylon or metal rods in the other diaphragm seal retainer.

 (4)  
Install the mechanical seal.

 (a)  
Install the inboard edge of the mechanical seal attach flange into the mechanical seal retainer.

 CAUTION:_______BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU INSTALL THE SEAL. DO NOT MAKE CUTS, TEARS, OR HOLES IN THE SEAL. DAMAGE TO THE SEAL CAN EASILY OCCUR.

 (b)  
Use the door seal installation tool (or a smooth, rounded tool) to push the outboard edge of the seal into the outboard side of the mechanical seal retainer.

 NOTE: Use liquid soap to lubricate the seal during the
____ installation. A soap solution that does not damage the paint or seal is authorized.
