bearing to or from the radio beacon and home on or track to or from the station. When a radio beacon is
installed in conjunction with an instrument landing system marker, it is normally called a compass locator.
nonenergizing brakes. See nonservo brakes.
nonferrous metal. A metal that does not contain iron.
nonflexible control cable. Steel aircraft control cable made of either 7 or 19 strands of solid wire.
Nonflexible cable can be used only for installations in which the cable does not pass over pulleys.
noninductive load (electrical load). An electrical load that does not have any inductance. Its opposition to
current is caused by resistance and/or capacitance.
noninductive winding (electrical machine). A two-part winding made in such a way that the magnetic
field produced by one part cancels the field produced by the other. When the magnetic fields cancel each
other, there is no opposition caused by inductance. All the opposition is caused by resistance.
nonlinear scale (indicating instrument scale). A scale on an indicating instrument in which the numbers
are grouped close together at one end and spread out at the other end.
nonlinear system. A system whose output does not change in the same proportion as the input. If the
output voltage of a system changes as the square of the input voltage, the system is nonlinear.
nonmagnetic material. Any material that cannot be magnetized nor is attracted to a magnet. Wood, paper,
and most plastics are nonmagnetic, and aluminum, brass, and most nonferrous metals are nonmagnetic.
nonmovement area (air traffic control). Taxiways and apron (ramp) areas not under the control of air
traffic.
nonporous. The state of a material having no pores or openings through which liquids or gases can seep.
Glass is an example of a nonporous material.
nonprecision approach procedure. 14 CFR Part 1: “A standard instrument approach procedure in which
no electronic glide slope is provided.”
nonrepairable damage. Damage to an aircraft or component that cannot be repaired. This type of damage
requires the part to be replaced.
nonrigid airship. A form of steerable lighter-than-air aircraft that uses the pressure of the gas to maintain
the shape of the envelope. A blimp is an example of a nonrigid airship.
nonscheduled airline. An airline that carries passengers or cargo for hire, but does not operate according
to a regular or published schedule.

nonservo brakes (aircraft brakes). Brakes that do not use the weight of the aircraft to increase the friction.
Disk brakes and expander tube brakes are examples of nonservo brakes.
nonskid brakes. Aircraft power brakes that do not lock up and allow a tire to skid. Wheels equipped with
nonskid brakes have a wheel-speed sensor in their hub that measures the rate at which the wheel decelerates
(slows its rotation). If the wheel decelerates at a rate that shows a skid is beginning, the nonskid valve
between the power brake control valve and the wheel cylinder is signaled to release the hydraulic pressure
to the brake until the wheel begins to speed up. Then the valve automatically reapplies the pressure.
A wheel equipped with a nonskid brake is held on the edge of a skid, but a skid is not allowed to
develop. Nonskid brakes are also called antiskid brakes.
nonspecular. Nonreflecting. Nonspecular lacquer is used to finish the deck of an aircraft fuselage ahead of
the cockpit so light reflections will not impair the pilot’s vision.
nontautening dope. Aircraft dope that causes almost no shrinkage of the fabric on which it is applied.
Nontautening dope is used on polyester fabric after it has been shrunk with heat.
nonvolatile memory (digital computer memory). Memory in which the stored data is not lost when
power to the computer is turned off. ROM (Read Only Memory) is nonvolatile, while RAM (Random
Access Memory) is volatile.
NOR gate (logic gate). A NOT OR logic gate that has two or more inputs and one output. The output is
logic zero (NOT one) when the signal on any one of the inputs is logic one. The symbol for a NOR gate is
the symbol for an OR gate, followed by a small circle, to show that the output of the gate is inverted. (Its
logic condition is changed.)
normal (geometry). Normal, in geometry, means perpendicular. A line is normal to another line if it is
perpendicular to it, and it is normal to a curve if it is perpendicular to a line tangent to the curve at the point
the line intersects it.
normal (meteorology). The value of an element averaged for a given location over a period of years and
recognized as a standard.
normal category aircraft. An aircraft certificated under 14 CFR Part 23 that is not certificated in the
