6. Flap Power Drive Unit (PDU) Seal Installation

A. General
(1) This procedure is applicable to the seals on the power drive unit (PDU) at the attachment of the
hydraulic motor, and the electric motor.

G. Seal Installation
SUBTASK 27-51-51-020-010
(1) Install the seal [53] on the power drive unit [21]:
(a) Make sure the seal [53], and the mating surfaces on the power drive unit [21] are clean.
(b) Lubricate the new seal [53], and the mating surfaces on the power drive unit [21] with fluid,
D00070.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU PROTECT THE SEAL LIP DURING THE INSTALLATION. THE
SPLINES ON THE SHAFT [56] CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SEAL.
(c) Use a seal installation sleeve, SPL-1755 to install the seal [53] in the power drive unit [21].
NOTE: If the sleeve is not available, you can use hand pressure to install the seal [53].
You can use the retainer [54] to protect the seal lip, and to get the correct seal
depth.
1) Insert the seal [53] to a depth of 0.32 to 0.33 inch (8.13 to 8.38 mm).
NOTE: There are two types of seal retainers used on the PDU. They are only
interchangeable at the hydraulic motor input shaft location.
(d) To install the plain retainer [54], do the following steps:
1) Apply a layer of compound, C00913 to the flange of the retainer [54], and to the shank
and threads of the screws [55].
2) Install the retainer [54] and the screws [55] on the power drive unit [21].
(e) To install the retainer [54], with the excluder seal (and O-ring), do the following steps:
1) Apply a layer of corrosion inhibiting non-drying paste, G50136 to the flange of the
retainer [54], and to the shank and threads of the screws [55].
2) Make sure the seal bore in the power drive unit [21] is clean.
3) Lubricate the seal bore in power drive unit [21] the with the Christo-lube MCG111
grease, D50011.
4) Lubricate the excluder seal lips (and O-ring) on the retainer [54] with the Christo-lube
MCG111 grease, D50011.
(f) Install the retainer [54] and the screws [55] on the power drive unit [21].

(4) Install the plug [51] in the power drive unit [5]:
(a) Lubricate the new packing [52] with fluid, D00467.
