If you are tracking from the south east to the north west and plan a fix at
Commonwealth Hill (5 NM north west of 705 feet spot height) -
- Many bores, tanks, tracks, claypans and scattered buildings in area.
- Hard to pick spot height, but difference in terrain might help.
- Easier after practice, but not recommended first time.
Better to track north up the Stuart Highway or west along the railway until a
suitable fix is found to continue north west.

Much of the country would be pretty safe for a a forced landing when its dry.
Note that dry rivers often stand out from the greenery growing along either
bank.

But how it changes when the wet comes. Rivers become miles wide,
homesteads go under and finding features like roads, railways and lakes is
impossible.

Think you’re lost?!
Probably not very far out - don't panic
Use heading and time from last fix
Add 10% fudge factor on ground speed
- ground speed 150 knots, use 15 nms
- 15 nm circle around where you think you are.
If you think you are lost, chances are the fix you are looking for is under the
wing. Don’t panic, take your time.
Don’t forget you can slow the aircraft. No point in getting more lost quickly.
Chances are very high that you are within that circle.
Still lost?
Check ground to find features which fit the chart
Accurately record any heading changes while doing this
Check compass and DG
If reach ETA without finding fix, commence wide circle
Check for gross planning error
Notify someone
Navaids
Land
Now need to see what is on the ground and then find that feature on the chart.
Accurately record any heading changes while you are determining your
position. That means don’t make too many heading changes as you will spend
all your time with your head inside.
If still unsure, it is time to check for any gross pre-flight planning error or inflight
error. You should have been confident of your last fix, so the error area
can be narrowed.
If still unsure, notify someone if you can and use navigation aids if available.
Land if all else has failed. Land with sufficient light and fuel to allow time to
find a good landing area.
Forced Landing

Some of our country is not very suitable for forced landings. Try to avoid
overflights of areas where you cannot safely land in an emergency.

Forced Landing
Trim for glide at best glide speed - know it!
On track, flight plan and radio calls will help rescuers
Mayday with accurate position
- HF or VHF with known traffic/overlying CTA
Land along and between sand dunes
If the engine stops, know your procedures. It might be worse with smoke in
the cabin obstructing your visibility.
If you submitted that SARTIME flight plan, talked with someone on the radio
you should be found more quickly.
